The South Wales regional winners in the Countryside Alliance’s second annual Best Rural Retailer competition have been announced. These four exceptional winners will now go head-to-head with fellow regional winners for a shot at national glory. The judging panel, led by Countryside Alliance South Wales Regional Director Adrian Simpson, chose a winner in each of the four categories:

Adrian says: “Teifi and Jenny were regional champions in 2005 and they have done it again in the this year. They are heroes of Welsh produce, with 85% local stock in their shop from their farm and the 125 producers within a 40-mile radius that they support. Teifi and Jenny are committed to promoting local food to the whole community, especially the young. They run healthy eating tuck shops in conjunction with local primary schools where the pupils are in charge of ordering the stock. This is much more than just a business and Teifi and Jenny deserve all the praise they get – they have earned it!”

Morgan's Newsagents

Llangadog
Carmarthenshire

Adrian says: “Morgan’s Post Office is the heart of the bilingual community of Llangadog – one nomination said that they not only go the extra mile, they will take you the extra mile. Morgan’s provides customers a village shop, newsagents, post office and internet centre all-in-one but it is also the main meeting point for the 500 residents of the close knit village. Win and Richard’s family have been providing this service for over 60yrs and also saved the Post Office from closing. The friendliness, hard work, spirit and service Morgan’s provide make them very, very worthy winners of this category.”

Adrian says: “This is an original idea and a great story. Grandma Valerie’s books, CD Roms and podcasts are all about encouraging grandparents to be actively involved with educating their grandchildren. The whole ethos of the business is centred around work being produced from home in a rural community, particularly for the older generation. Val aims to create employment, especially for mature people, in particular grandparents, who can visit schools and help set up after school clubs and activities. This is an inclusive business helping both older and younger generations and there are plans to publish Welsh language stories this year.”

Owain's Butchers

3 Bridge Street
Aberaeron
Ceredigion
SA46 0AP
01545 570242
Adrian says: “Born and bred in Ceredigion, butcher Owain Peckover has worked in the butchery business since the age of 14 and is an exceptional butcher who employs local people and supports local farmers. Owain sources the meat he sells by visiting local farms and selecting the meat personally. The animals are then slaughtered by a local abattoir at Tregaron, meaning low food miles. Owain supports local community groups and sponsors the local rugby team, and has also recently expanded into catering for parties and functions. It is obvious that his personality and the service he offers are central to his community.”

Regional winners have been invited to a winners’ reception to be held at the House of Lords on 7th February to find out who the overall national winners are.
