David Maclean (left) congratulates Lord Newborough on his win in 2005 David Maclean (on the left in the picture, taken at last year's Best Rural Retailer Reception), Member of Parliament for Penrith and the Border, has congratulated his shortlisted and winning Best Rural Retailers by putting down an Early Day Motion (EDM) in Parliament. An Early Day Motion is a way of MPs drawing attention to an issue of interest or concern, and in taking this step Mr Maclean has highlighted his support for his retailers (and the Best Rural Retailer competition) and his concerns for the future of the Post Office network. On Saturday 16th December Tony Andrews, Chief Executive of the Scottish Countryside Alliance wrote an article in the Scotsman entitled "This first class service deserves your support".

The article was about the Government's decision to close 2,500 Post Offices, and Tony was quick to point out that the Drumbeg stores and Post Office in Sutherland, judged as Scotland's Best Rural Retailers and central to their community, are a perfect example of what we stand to lose. The community theme of the competition is also relevant as we fight to save our Post Office network.
