Nominations for the Countryside Alliance Awards are already pouring in, but more are needed before the 27th October voting deadline. Well-known names such as TV star and pig farmer Jimmy Doherty, environmentalist Zac Goldsmith, keen shot and cricketing legend Mike Atherton and food champion Lady Caroline Cranbook are in competition with hundreds of others in a quest for the title of Rural Hero.
The Countryside Alliance Awards, previously known as the Best Rural Retailer competition, are public vote led and are open to nominations across a range of categories until 27th October at www.countrysideallianceawards.co.uk. They aim to celebrate the characters, skills, traditions and enterprise of the countryside through the people who work so hard to make it tick.
The categories are:
1. Best Local Food Award
2. Best Village Shop/ PO Award
3. Rural Enterprise Award (formerly the diversification category)
4. Daily Telegraph Best Traditional Business Award
5. Rural Hero (NEW to 2008 - could be anyone heroic, no matter age, line of work or what their heroic deeds)

Vernon Frost, Steve Ware and Neil Brailsford have been nominated for a Countryside Alliance Award for their The Shop @ Stanwick and Post Office in High Street. Read a piece in the Northampton Evening Telegraph entitled "Rural shop in Stanwick is in line for a top national honour "

The Scottish Countryside Alliance Awards were launched in mid-September 2008 at the Scottish Parliament by the Scottish Countryside Alliance with Alex Johnstone MSP. There are a number of exciting categories including Rural Hero 2008. Other categories are Local Food Award; Village Shop/ Post Office Award; Rural Enterprise Award; Daily Telegraph Best Traditional Business Award.
To make your nominations, click here . Remember, nominations close on the 27th of October with a winners reception at Holyrood in February 2009. The winners will also represent Scotland at a UK reception in the Houses of Parliament in March.
